Welcome

This two-year project will resurface and improve Glacier Creek Highway from Glacier Highway Access Road (near the old Walmart) to the intersection with Vanderbilt Road as you are traveling to Twin Lakes.

weekly project updates

WEEK OF AUGUST 8

  • There will be paving at the Renninger roundabout.
  • Weather permitting, sidewalk will be poured at the Renninger roundabout.
  • Lanes in both directions from the Renninger roundabout area to Central Avenue will be milled. Paving may also occur if weather permits.
  • The Lemon Creek bridge will have curb and gutter installed.
  • Chatham Electric will be working on the school flashers adjacent to the old Walmart property and Central Avenue.

Road Closure July 12 -26, 2022

Renninger Street will be closed at Glacier Highway from Tuesday, July 12, at 7:00 am, through Tuesday, July 26, for construction of a new roundabout. Access to Renninger Street will be provided by detour route through Northwood Drive. Expect new traffic patterns on Glacier Highway near the old Walmart Building. Traffic through the work zone will be controlled by flaggers during daytime hours. Please drive carefully.

The signing and traffic marking design sheet for the Vanderbilt Hill Road and Glacier Highway intersection is available for viewing and download below. The permanent features, yet to be installed for this area include:

  • Dedicated crosswalk for bicyclists
  • Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) Signs on the shoulders

The initial design removed the left turn lane onto Vanderbilt Hill Road from Old Glacier Highway to install a raised median curb with refuge for crossers and to warn vehicular traffic of crossing bicyclists. Based on recent public comments on this design, the State of Alaska Department of Transportation will remove the planned concrete median and permanently reinstall the left turn acceleration lane at the Vanderbilt Hill Road/Glacier Highway intersection. When weather conditions allow, the painted traffic markings will be installed per the striping plan. The crosswalk ladder and rectangle rapid flashing beacon (RRFB) will be installed in the 2022 construction season.

We appreciate your feedback and take these into consideration in our discussions at the State of Alaska Department of Transportation. An update will be emailed and posted here as design changes occur.

    Project Overview

    Why is this project needed?

    • The Glacier Highway corridor through the Lemon Creek area is heavily traveled by industrial and passenger vehicles, and non-motorized users (i.e. pedestrians and bicyclists). There are inadequate facilities for non-motorized users and at times there are long delays for vehicles at the Glacier Highway and Vanderbilt Hill Road intersection.

    • This project will make the road more accessible to pedestrians, including those with disabilities and will improve mobility for bicyclists and transit users while maintaining the existing level of service for  vehicular traffic.

    What improvements will be made?

    • The entire length of the roadway will be repaved
    • The Renninger Street intersection will be converted to a roundabout
    • A traffic signal will be added to the Davis Avenue intersection
    • A sidewalk and lighting will be added on the water side of Glacier Highway
    • Pedestrian and bicycle crossings will be added along the corridor
    • Drainage will be improved

    How will this affect me?

    • Throughout the project there will be periods of time in      which traffic will be stop controlled. Detours will be in place to accommodate all road users.
    • Information about traffic conditions, including the current placement of detours, will be posted on the project website and updated weekly via email. To be added to the project’s distribution list, please send an email to info@lemoncrk.com
    • Please remember to use caution when traveling through      the work zones. Watch for and follow direction from flaggers and construction signs.
    • Sidewalks and bicycle lanes within the work zone may be periodically closed, watch for detour signs.
